 Tomb Raider
Alexandra Robbins delves into the secrets of Skull and Bones.

Secrets of the Tomb
Alexandra Robbins
Harcourt Brace, 336 pp, $24
   reviewed by Emma Pollack-Pelzner

An initiation involving coffins and naked mud wrestling, thousands of dollars given to members upon graduation, and financial support of Adolf Hitler: these are some of the myths about the secret society Skull and Bones with which Alexandra Robbins opens her investigative book, Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, the Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power. After an intriguing introduction filled with lurid tales, Robbins devotes the rest of her book to debunking these rumors and exposing the significantly less glamorous reality of Skull and Bones. Not only does the initiation involve drinking “blood” in the form of Kool-Aid, but society members receive no money upon graduation and have to make quite an effort even to access alumni connections.

The first half of the book provides an extensive history of clubs, societies, and social life at Yale. Robbins describes in rigorous detail the types of clubs that preceded today's secret societies, including the literary societies of the early 1800s, “the first undergraduate intellectual societies in the country,” of which every undergraduate was a member, and the freshman, sophomore, and junior societies which came a few years later and included public, elaborate initiations but were still dedicated to intellectual pursuits such as speeches and debates. Through these and many other examples, Robbins argues that Yale has a long history of tradition, ritual and spirit.

Robbins provides so many examples in her unchronological history that she is likely to bore readers who are not connected to Yale or who do not have a deep interest in its history. They may be somewhat sustained, however, by Robbins's vivid sentences and thorough reporting, perhaps a testament to her impressive biography which includes time as a reporter at the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly. Unfortunately, her book is narrated in the expository voice of an extended magazine article (her research, in fact, began with a shorter piece in the Atlantic) and she never sustains an involved narrative that would carry a reader through the less interesting factual sections.

Things get more interesting when Robbins moves on from Yale's history to the specifics of Skull and Bones and a tour of its tomb. Skull and Bones was founded in 1832 by William Russell after he had a falling out with Phi Beta Kappa. Secretary of Yale's PBK chapter and valedictorian of his class, Russell was furious when a friend of his was not elected to this elite group. With his friend and 13 others, Russell broke away from PBK and formed a “bigger, badder, better society,” which met secretly to prevent the expulsion of its members. The idea for a secret society, as well as the name Skull and Bones, likely came from Germany, where Russell had studied during his Yale career. Skull and Bones may in fact have formed as a chapter of a German mother organization. Though it no longer claims any connection to other organizations, the tomb is still covered in German artifacts. German phrases are inscribed in the walls, and a print of an open tomb filled with skulls, books, and other objects is labeled “From the German chapter.” Even one of the society's traditional songs is sung to the tune of the German national anthem, “Deutschland über Alles.”

In addition to the German memorabilia, Robbins exposes a tomb filled to the brim with “a potpourri of stuffed moose heads, candles, mannequin knights in armor, antlers, boating flags, manuscripts, medieval artwork, old photographs, a samovar, a Buddha on an elephant, a truck full of woolen blankets, and statuettes of Demosthenes.” Though it may be exciting for non-society members finally to learn of the secret goings-on of the Bones tomb, the reality is far from thrilling. As Robbins reports, “In its three stories and an attic, the Bones tomb houses a great morass of, simply, stuff . . . Though daunting on the outside, the inside of the tomb . . . resembles more the Victorian house of a pack rat.” Again going into laborious detail, Robins describes many individual paintings and artifacts in the tomb. Much of the decor is devoted, unsurprisingly, to the theme of death. A mummy lies on a mantel upstairs, and cups and mugs are shaped like skulls. The mood inside the tomb is more like a bad horror movie than anything truly frightening. The most impressive room in the tomb is the dining hall. Large windows line the room and overlook a hidden courtyard; their blinds are scrolls printed with Skull and Bones songs.

Robbins is even able to expose the “Inner Temple,” which is a significantly less cluttered large room decorated with a few key artifacts. Most interestingly, the Inner Temple, or IT, houses a skeleton which the members refer to as “`the Madam,' out of their conviction that it was once Madame de Pompadour . . . one of the most influential women of the eighteenth century,” and a grandfather clock in front of which each Bones portrait is snapped. When the society was smaller, each alumnus was given a similar grandfather clock on his wedding day, but once the alumni group grew to its current proportions, the tradition was stopped for financial reasons. The IT is the primary location of the Skull and Bones initiation, to which Robbins also has unprecedented access. Though not involving coffins, nudity, or mud, the mundane reality of the initiation still sounds like fun. Robbins describes it as “a cross between an amusement park haunted house and a human pinball game, with the blind dizziness of a trip through a sandstorm.” A famous alumnus presides over the activities, which include teasing, introductions to the tomb, illuminations of the society's traditions and history, an oath of secrecy, and lots of shouting.

One of the reasons Robbins may have been able to gain such extensive access to the tomb and to interviews with Bones members is that she herself was a member of Scroll and Key. Her bias is evident throughout the book, as Robbins never really addresses the elitism inherent in secret societies. In fact, the question of why a non-society reader might be interested in the room numbers on the second floor of the Skull and Bones tomb never seems to enter into her mind. Perhaps because of her own connections to the secret society community, Robbins comes to her reporting with the bias that societies are both good and of interest, and so fails to address explicitly either of these debatable assumptions. One of the strongest points she makes is when she considers the possibility that societies are not all they are cracked up to be, and that even alumni are disappointed with their reality. She suggests that perhaps alums continue to perpetuate the myths of Skull and Bones to make up for their own rather uneventful experience: “their cognitive dissonance becomes necessary in order to rationalize why they sacrificed every Thursday and Sunday night of their final year in college . . . to meet with a bunch of strangers in a relatively windowless building when the reward to a twenty-two-year-old in fact involves no money, dubious power, and diminished mystique.”

Robbins comes close to indicating the relevance Skull and Bones has on the rest of the world in one of her final chapters, where she enters into a dazzling illumination of the hundreds of Bonesmen who have held prominent positions at Yale and in the United States. Included in these lists are the names Bundy, Harriman, Buckley, Taft and, of course, Bush. Bonesmen have helped each other gain positions of prominence in a wide variety of economic and political fields. For example, Robbins describes George Bush, Sr.'s political ascent through a string of fellow society members who acted as mentors, employers and employees in the oil industry, connections to the Republican party, counsels for Bush's son on legal and financial affairs, and held prominent governmental positions once Bush was elected president. Again, however, the “so what” element is missing. While Robbins lists the appointments Bush gave to Bonesmen during his presidency, she rarely elaborates on what effects these appointments had, or why it matters that these people were in Skull and Bones at all. Nor does she suggest that there is anything in particular that we can or should do about these connections. Additionally, Robbins never explains whether the power of these famous families arose from their affiliation with Skull and Bones, or if the secret societies are a byproduct of already existent power. Though her obvious admiration of societies indicates that she thinks the former is true, Robbins devotes this chapter to a whirlwind tour of famous alumni rather than a careful analysis of the facts in support of her answer.

Clearly, however, Robbins is convinced that the power of secret societies is of the utmost importance. She actually goes so far as to suggest that people believe the Skull and Bones myths out of a need for a controlling, causal force—they don't like to believe that power can come out of nowhere. “People's need for the Skull and Bones conspiracies to elucidate an underlying order,” she claims, “is similar to the need for religion to explain death and purpose.” Many Yalies would not equate secret societies with religion, and Robbins does not make her case clearly enough to convince us to do so. Ultimately, the importance and power of Skull and Bones lies primarily in its secrecy, not in its reality, and this secrecy is ironically exactly what Robbins so thoroughly strips away.

That is why I started a new thread, to bring in new information, fresh unseen (by most) information, I have a good reason for strting a new thread.  Did you read the PDF file attachment yet?   It is not surprising that you would be the first one to TRY to debunk the information.  I suggest you read it, especially all the citatations and sources cited in the work.   It is written exceptionally well and very comphrehensive too.

I began to read it and most of the information is speculative.  It proves that it is nepotistic and elitist.  Great job, that's nothing new.  In fact, that's why it was established, so that those who could not get into PBK would have somewhere to go to feel better than other people.   Some of it borders on the absurd (george bush being involved in the JFK assassination).  Other stuff, like the illuminati, has been seriously damaged by the information that Wise has posted here, which is significantly more in depth.

As for the citations, very few of them reference page numbers (none that I have seen so far and I am 20 pages into it).  It puts an extensive bibliography at the end, much of which is NOT referenced in the article!

I have posted a book review of a book written by someone WITH FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE of S&B and the Yale Senior Society culture, it debunks a great deal, if not all, of the mystic nonsense in this article.   The best part about these kinds of things is they ignore people in it who are not sinister.  They ignore the kids who are poverty lawyers, researchers and professors, people who do not like the history of Bones (from an elitist perspective).  The vast majority of this article has an article in it that comes from a site that tries to prove UFO existence!  That's a joke.  But what's even more of a joke is trying to link a fraternity (S&B) with the JFK assassination.

Again, why not research DKE fraternity of which many bonesmen were members of at some point?  Why not research the roughly dozen other senior societies at yale?

We already went through this.  NO, but I know people who were.  3 of them I knew since my FIRST day on campus and can honestly say that they are in no way involved in any sort of conspiracy.  I suggest you all read the link to the IT thread that I posted here.

Rush Limbaugh Radio Caller Speaks on Skull and Bones; Rush at first tries to play it off:

http://www.prisonplanet.com/030904inaflap.html

On Monday, Cameron in Buckley, Michigan rang me up to say, "Nobody in the media has touched the biggest, the most controversial and the most important news item of this year. The George W. Bush and John F. Kerry Yale University Skull and Bones connection. And unless there's a massive, blatant cover-up on the part of both the left and the right media outlets, I don't see why nobody is touching this."

Now, I've heard about this super-secret society - but only as it relates to George W. Bush's membership. "Skull and Bones" sounds like a very exclusive society. How did Bush get into this bunch? I thought he was a doofus hayseed hick from Texas that hangs around the barbecue and whips up wars for the fun of it. Seriously, folks, Cameron's description of the Skull & Bones Society sounds like the whole Ivy League and the Kennedy School of Government in particular. I just don't think it's a conspiracy.

Listen to the audio. First Rush insinuates he doesn't know what Skull and Bones is but when the caller displays a good grasp of the facts Rush has to acknowledge Skull and Bones and then try and whitewash it.

Mobile-friendly version Immortal Technique Biography

Born Felipe Andres Coronel on the 19th of February 1978, hip-hop artist Immortal Technique is a controversial figure in the U.S. His songs speak of the need for social justice and equality among all races, with special emphasis on the people of color or Latin Americans, but they also cover topics such as the fight against unfair imprisonments or militarism and many others.

His biography is hence quite intriguing, to say the least, and, just like the best anti aging cream is probably going to be lingering over the shelves of all cosmetic stores for many years to come, Immortal Technique’s songs are going to remain hot, fresh and sought after for a really long time. Due to the fact they speak about topics which are to be considered taboos, his lyrics continue to be listened to with the exterior shutters down in most homes.

Immortal technique was born in Peru, in El Hospital Militar de Lima; several years later, his family moved to America in order to escape the harsh living conditions in Peru. Even though they could not afford to buy any terrain a vendre there, they managed to move to Harlem in the ‘80s. Immortal Technique went to Hunter High School, but just like a hip replacement recall is never of good omen, his grades and behavior weren’t any good during high school either. He was the school bully, he harassed other students and he was not afraid to get involved in scandals with drug dealers from around the area. And while his interactions with these drug dealers were not as numerous as used cars in Phoenix are, they still managed to leave an ugly mark on his biography.

Plus, his graffiti did not actually resemble any Dreamweaver templates, but he was famous for his controversial acts of vandalism. His violence against others almost got him expelled in 1996, but he somehow managed to finish high school and even attend college at Pennsylvania State University. This time, his college experience only lasted for two years; he was then charged and convicted and he was eventually imprisoned in Pennsylvania.

In prison, just like a SEO San Antonio company would focus on booting a web site’s ranking, Immortal Technique also focused on boosting his own social ranking. He began studying the policy of religious history, and, finding the inspiration he needed, he began putting his thoughts in lyrics. In 1999 he was paroled and, even though he was first considered some sort of Agen Bola, as no one had heard of him at first, he began to attend freestyle battles he started winning.

From there on, his career started to bloom, as he gave birth to albums such as “Revolutionary Vol 1” in 2002, “Revolutionary Vol 2” in 2004 and “Revolutionary Vol 3” in 2008. He also became a political activist and started to sing about political injustice (check out his opinion on the imprisonment of Mumia Abu-Jamal or the songs on George W. Bush). Despite of the fact that his albums might not have gotten the type of positive reviews African mango reviews are usually comprised of, this has not stopped him from getting involved in future projects, including an important film collaboration. He might not approve the work of the CNA Financial Corporation, but we all need to eat, right?

Recently I've been in the market for used cars. Which I'm sure many of you know how long that process can take. Having to go from dealer to dealer and look at one car after another. What a painstaking process! Its a good thing I don't have to take a personality test after the whole process. I'm sure I'd have some pretty skewed results. After finally settling down and buying a new Audi A4, I found out I had a bigger problem on my hands. Where am I gonna park the car during winter? I decided I had to contact a local contractor and get remodeling estimates to redo our garage which had been having problems with leaks all last winter. After getting some rather expensive estimates back from contractors our family finally decided to move to a different area of New York, we took a look at jamestown ny homes which was recommended by a close friend of mine. Have you ever just had that feeling after looking at a town? You just knew it was the one. Well thankfully we had a lot of wonderful homes to look at that were priced perfectly. We eventually decided to go with a home with a nice garage for the new car, a gym witih a full pull up bar, and best of all my wife could stop taking her proactol and finally begin to use our at home gym!

If during your trip you make it out to England be sure to say "Hi!" to our friends that is a wedding photographer york. They do an exceptional job and we recommend them to everyone that we know!
When overlooking your home don't forget the key essentials to tie in the whole room and complete it altogether, such as a POS software to manage your point of sale units. Making the perfect home for everyone in your family is doable with the right budget. Start by heading to auction sites to see what type of homes are currently on the market and the prices. Auction sites provide a medium to determine market value of homes in the are that you are looking at. If traveling internationally and looking at homes in Drakensberg then be sure to look online for Drakensberg accommodation. Drakensbergs accomodations often come with coffee machine in your room as well! For us caffeine lovers, you know how important that is when traveling in a new city. What often begins with a worldwide traveling excursion often ends in an unknown city. If you are planning on traveling to far away places its best to do your research on them before venturing out. Planning how to pack, and what to bring with you from the beginning can make the difference altogether. Planning on which handbag to take is crucial to your happiness. Now I know you are probably thinking that's trivial, although choosing the right handbag to take with you on a lengthy trip around the world is of the utmost importance. Make sure that you take as little as possibly needed on the trip. You don't want to lug around suitcases, and unnecessary stuff throughout the world. It'll weigh down on your trip, no pun intended.
The History and Growth of Rap Music

If you are a music enthusiast, then it is very likely that you have come across a genre of music called rap music. Rap music is area that has very clear distinguishing features most notably the rapid and rhythmic chanting of the lyrics perfectly timed to the beat and musical accompaniment that forms the base of the song. Rap music traces its roots to the development of the hiphop subculture which predominantly carries four complementary musical styles namely: rapping, dancing and in particular break dancing, scratching or more popularity known as DJing, and graffiti writing which others dub as vandalism. Another sub-element of this genre is beat-boxing which also features heavily in the repertoire of many rap artists. If you thought this was an easy musical genre to characterize, then you were poorly informed: consider, many research papers and doctoral dissertations have been written on the subject of rap music and its accompanying stylistic elements.

The history of rap music, or hip-hop music, is composed of a series of rapid development phases that have all culminated in the popular rap versions of today. Before rap music took off in the 1990s, it was predominantly referred to as disco rap in the late 1970s. The three rappers who had a hand in coining the term “rap music” were DJ Hollywood, Lovebug Starski, and Keith Cowboy, the last one being officially credited with the term hip-hop. Rap music original began with improvisations and freestyle singing to add an element of unpredictability to the songs in parties and other gatherings. Even in the 1960s to 1970s, the initial elements of rap music where already sown in urban subcultures particularly in New York City where adhoc performances in the streets led to a coalescing of influences in the wake of the Civil Rights era. Like the iPhone 5 release date, it had a slow and steady rise building into an explosion of creativity and style that has made it into what it has become today.

At this very early stage of rap development, it was particularly tied to emcee-ing more than it was associated to any specific song. It predominantly tied songs together as an adlib in between. It was born out of the creative inputs of DJs who had to work with self-imposed musical constraints such as the 4/4 time beat and sampling or sequencing sections of other songs to create a smooth flow of uninterrupted musical stimuli. These were eventually married with electronic equipment such as drums and synthesizers, and ultimate melodies to give it that bite and identity. In a sense, rap music artists were basically like a video game designer who had to figure out each artistic component at every turn until it developed into a more coherent musical genre that became the rap music we know today.

The first recorded version of rap music came alive in the early 1980s when DJs decided to make records out of their freestyle MCing. This necessitated the documentation of song lyrics so they do not change during each and every rendition. The age of the stromanbieter for rap music was gone paving the way for more organized chaos. Still, the freestyle and improvisation element remained a part of many DJ interludes as the song goes through certain sections that did not require too much rap singing.

Likewise, as a consequence of the hip-hop records, the influence of rap began to spread faster than ever before. Artists no longer had to travel far to get their music heard. Now, records from New York City and Philadelphia can be reproduced and transported to cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans, Dallas, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Seattle among others for people to appreciate and enjoy. This was primarily the reason for rap music’s rapid growth. Like Christmas mini lights, cities formed the nodes through which rap music would spread to other parts of the country. From small beginnings to grand achievements, the birth certificate translation to true stardom took a matter of years for rap music to be realized. Since then, its take-off and rise has been meteoric.

In this regard, it is almost impossible to talk about rap music but not discuss the golden age of rap. This was the era from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s when rap grew at an astounding rate fueled by the creative contributions of many artists from all over the continental United States and in many parts of the world. The primary trait of the Golden Age or Rap was that it was an almost unbroken wave of transformative music with every single pushing the boundaries of the genre. From this age and in the succeeding Gansta Rap age came names like Run-D.M.C., Dr. Dre, Ice T, MC Hammer, The Wu-tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, and The Notorious B.I.G. among others. The list of names can virtually fill a Sharepoint Hive without any problems.

According to social studies published in 2005, teenagers and children are more familiar with hip-hop and rap music more than any other musical genre. Up to 65% of all children from ages 8 to 18 hear hip-hop music on a daily basis, making it their routinary keratin hair treatment session, almost to the point that it has become an intrinsic part of their lives. With the diversification of the genre to include the more stylish R&B or rhythm and blues, it is not difficult to explain how rap music has continued to pervade radio station, TV and movie song line-ups. The marriage of rap and jazz which paved the way for R&B is itself a phenomenon that warrants all sorts of social analysis.

And with its very strong following, it is safe to say that rap music is here to stay. Years from now, when you open your TV on a bright Saturday morning, there’s a big chance you would be watching the next stage in the evolution of rap music, and there’s an even better chance you would be dancing or singing to that tune.

Immortal Technique Rapper Biography

Immortal technique is the stage name for which rapper Felipe Andres Coronel is popularly known. His lyrics characterized by its unique mixture of socialist commentary of social class hierarchy, religion, wealth, poverty to contemporary issues touching on governmental and institutional racism. Perhaps you may have come across information about this popular icon as you undertake research for that mba online, or for whatever course you are undertaking, be it bachelors in criminal justice, performing arts degree, governance systems, online nurse practitioner programs, history, or any other course for which you have to do online research.

The rapper was born on the 19th day of February 1978 in Lima, Peru. During the internal conflicts that took place in their country at the time, his parents migrated to Harlem, New York. Probably, in the process of migration to the country, they may have used boats at least once in the journey.
