Desperate Housewives hit by US writers' strike
From correspondents in Los Angeles
November 08, 2007 08:33am
Article from: Agence France-Presse

US television series Desperate Housewives has fallen victim to Hollywood's writers' strike, as analysts grimly forecast the feud may rumble on for months.

Production on new episodes of the sitcom which chronicles the fortunes of the women of Wisteria Lane was to stop today, according to entertainment journals Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.

The show is among the first major US network series to go into shutdown because of the strike, which began on Monday after bitter contract talks between writers and producers broke down.

The Writers Guild of America is seeking to secure payment from sales of television series and films downloaded or broadcast on the internet. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have rejected the demand.

The strike is Hollywood's first for nearly 20 years and analysts have warned losses from the dispute could top one billion dollars.

Popular talk shows such as Tonight with Jay Leno and the Late Show with David Letterman have already gone off the air because of the strike.

Yesterday, writers picketed the shooting of a Desperate Housewives episode in Los Angeles. Actress Eva Longoria later emerged to distribute pizza to picketers and declare support as filming prepared to stop.

"We are done, and we'll be on the lines supporting you," said Longoria. The series' creator, Marc Cherry, has been one of the WGA's lead negotiators during the dispute.

With no formal negotiations ongoing, entertainment press reports today said both writers and producers were digging in for a protracted stand-off that could run deep into 2008.

"My gut tells me at this point that it's going to be a long strike," Alan Brunswick, a former AMPTP counsel, told the Hollywood Reporter.

"Both sides at this point are too entrenched for it to end quickly. I want to be wrong about this one, but the two sides are so angry with each other that it's going to be awhile."

The Los Angeles Times reported meanwhile that major studios were planning on suspending long-term joint production deals with writer-producers, possibly leading to hundreds of lay-offs.

The report said studios would distribute letters today informing writer-producers whose companies do not have shows currently in production.

"Anyone who's not working on pilots or shows is going to get suspension letters," one top studio executive told The Times.

Meanwhile, the US version of The Office was suspended following star Steve Carell's refusal to cross the picket lines of striking writers, a producer said.

A rep for Carell did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press.

Sally Field, who won the best actress Oscar in 1979 for the pro-union film Norma Rae, left the set of her show, Brothers and Sisters, to visit strikers and show her support.

Good, let this strike go on as long as it can. I hope the writers will come up with a proposal allowing more creative and information oriented T.V. shows alongside the entertainment.

So you all would rather watch a couple episodes of your favorite TV shows or not have certain programming you don't like than have the people who actually write them have a better wage and proportionate share of the production? Blame the hiearchy of the entertainment industry for refusing to increase their wages, not the ones on the bottom who actually create ideas and develop scripts.

Btw "Reality" TV is heavily scripted so this is very unlikely unless you actually thought it was real than I don't know what to say to you.

Don't lie, you've been applying for reality TV shows ever since Survivor. You would love a Real World New Zealand right after a "good" episode of "Parental Control" on MTV.

I think it's definitely a good thing. Writers that actually come up with the stories and ideas behind these television shows should get a considerable share of the profits.

To be fair though, Parental control is hilarious because of how terrible it is.

Im not pissed at the writers. Im pissed at all the money guys. Its not the writers which caused the disruptions on DH last season - it was the character Bree getting pregnant and a few other things.

Striking writers will resume talks with studios
Mon Nov 19, 2007 6:52am EST
By Carl DiOrio

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The Hollywood writers strike will continue, but now so will negotiations between the union and the studios.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and studio reps will head back to the bargaining table on November 26 after back-channel dialogue facilitated by Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd helped put the parties onto a more productive track. The WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) put out brief, identical statements Friday night.

No other details were provided, and a press blackout was instituted. But it's clear that the emotion-charged issue of new-media compensation will remain front and center when the talks resume.

Despite the planned resumption of talks, the WGA intends to continue its picketing and other strike activities. Negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP broke down November 4, and strike pickets took to studio gates the next day.

Picketing will take place as planned Monday and a big writers march is planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on Hollywood Boulevard. No strike activities will be held the balance of the week, but that's only because none had been scheduled due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Pickets will reappear the same day negotiations resume. WGA West president Patric Verrone alerted guild members during the weekend that their picketing obligations remain in place.

"This announcement is a direct result of your efforts ... the hours you have spent on the picket lines, the days you've spent educating friends and colleagues, the boundless energy you've put into engaging with not only the Hollywood talent community but people all over the country and the world," Verrone said.

Verrone said that future picketing schedules "will be determined in consultation with the strike captains and will be designed to continue to have maximum effect on our employers and include both studio and location picketing."

Picketing and other strike activities also will continue in New York.

The resumption of talks in the face of continued picketing represents a concession by AMPTP president Nick Counter, who had said he wouldn't return to bargaining under such circumstances. There was no immediate AMPTP explanation for the move.

The WGA and AMPTP started their contentious negotiations for a new film and TV contract July 16, holding 17 sessions before talks broke down and the strike began. Only the last session featured a press blackout.

In that session, the WGA took a demand for expanded DVD residuals off the table, and the AMPTP responded with some movement on new compensation in the area of new media. But the WGA said the response wasn't enough, took to the streets and said its DVD demands were being restored.

Elected officials and industry figures have attempted to provide back-channel assistance in bringing the parties back to the table.

Top talent agents have been in the center of some of those efforts, as the major agency companies have been on the bleeding edge of economic impact from the WGA strike. The Lourd-assisted breakthrough came Friday, at a meeting the agent hosted at his home attended by studio executives and WGA officials.

Other public figures helping to get the parties talking again include Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, both of whom met with guild leaders and telephoned studio chiefs.

The writers strike already has brought to a halt production of many TV series, including NBC's "The Office" and ABC's equally high-profile "Desperate Housewives." It has sent late-night talk shows into reruns, and the Los Angeles-based "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" has had to cancel plans to shoot in New York after a showdown with the union about its continuing production.

Movie development also has been hampered, including an end for now to work on Sony's "Angels & Demons," a prequel to "The Da Vinci Code."

The curtailed productions might have provided motivation for studio execs to resume negotiations, though some have suggested that show cuts actually translate into cost savings on some lots.

Writers strike changes the picture for TV programming, business practices
Lynn Elber, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES - With "American Idol" and Jay Leno back on the air in January, it may seem that all is right with television. But the industry is facing its worst labour crisis in two decades, a crippling writers strike that's reshaping the business of TV and threatening to permanently shift the viewing habits of millions of Americans.

Now in its seventh week, the Writers Guild of America walkout has forced producers to reconsider how shows are developed, the type of shows produced and how they're sold to advertisers.

On the audience side of the equation, a flood of strike-induced reality series and truncated dramas may drive viewers toward alternate entertainment - including Internet programming, which is at the heart of the contract dispute.

The walkout has halted production of most scripted and late-night shows, although Leno and Conan O'Brien are coming back to work next month on NBC, as is ABC's Jimmy Kimmel. CBS' David Letterman was considered likely to follow suit.

Talk of industry change is dismissed by some writers as spin designed to undermine union resolve on payment for streamed and downloaded distribution. But networks contend the strike has given a new urgency to the need to confront ballooning costs and an evolving marketplace.

"The strike is forcing us to look at the way we all do business and to make choices that were tough when business was as usual," said NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker. "This is allowing us to make the tougher choices."

With negotiations at a standstill, the impact is extending to the 2008-09 season, beginning with the typical first-quarter "pilot season" in which networks commission single episodes of potential series.

It's an unwieldy process that may have had its day, said two executives at a major network, speaking on condition of anonymity because their company had yet to officially detail its plans.

Pilots are more expensive than ever to produce, reaching US$6 million or more for complex action dramas, but don't necessarily represent the series that are delivered, the executives said. This year's results were unimpressive, with a number of anticipated new series - ranging from NBC's "Bionic Woman" to ABC's "Cavemen" - failing to get ratings traction.

Instead, networks are considering taking pitches straight to series, especially when a show comes from road-tested producers. A prolonged strike would force the issue, pushing broadcasters up against the fall season production deadline.

Guild member Warren Leight, executive producer of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," contends the rumoured death of pilots is greatly exaggerated. "People have grumbled every year for the last 20 years that pilot season is too expensive," Leight said.

Another entrenched custom involves May events in New York at which networks, with elaborate, multimillion-dollar fanfare, unveil their fall schedules for Madison Avenue and collect billions of dollars in advertising commitments.

"There has been no final decision, but it is increasingly unlikely that we will do a traditional upfront presentation this year," CBS spokesman Chris Ender said. "We've been talking about it for years; this may be the opportunity to work with our clients to reinvent the process in a way that better serves networks and advertisers."

NBC is reconsidering the scope of its presentation, Zucker said, but added, "I don't think the selling period will change" because of its efficiency.

For audiences, the central issue is loyalty amid disorder.

Because of the strike, "Lost" may only be able to air half the episodes of the 16 that were planned when it returns in January. "Desperate Housewives" won't reveal the second part of a tornado cliffhanger until after the drama resumes production.

A few new scripted shows are poised to help fill the gap, and other options are emerging, some innovative. NBC said this week it will air "quarterlife," an Internet series from the producers of "thirtysomething," with short "webisodes" combined into hourlong episodes.

At least one network is taking a look at imported programming, mulling how receptive U.S. viewers would be to shows lacking an American accent.

But upcoming broadcast schedules largely will be stuffed with reality shows - and not just blockbusters like Fox's "American Idol," or ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," which returns in March.

If the genre doesn't burn itself out, the programming balance could remain tilted toward reality even after the strike is settled.

Will viewers warm to "Dance Wars: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann," ABC's "Dancing" spinoff, or NBC's "American Gladiators" with Hulk Hogan - or just shrug and look beyond TV for fun?

Dozens of established writers are trying to take entertainment directly to consumers on the Internet and negotiating with venture capitalists for startup funding.

In a recent consumer survey, half of those polled said that they have or will seek more online entertainment because of the strike, according to Kelton Research and the Wi-Fi Alliance, which tests and certifies wireless products.

On average, those questioned said they already get nearly a third of their entertainment online, according to the poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

While that suggests a dangerous drain for TV, especially for broadcast networks long subjected to cable's theft of viewers, one analyst cautioned that such a view ignores the corporate context.

In the last protracted Hollywood strike, the 1988 walkout by the writers guild, networks saw viewers migrate to cable and stay there. This time around, broadcasters may be losing audience share to a sister company, not a competitor.

The Walt Disney Co., for instance, owns ABC as well as cable channels including ABC Family and Disney Channel, while General Electric-owned NBC's corporate family has CNBC and MSNBC. Media conglomerates also are staking out Internet turf: MySpace is a unit of News Corp., which owns Fox TV and, among other cable channels, Fox News Channel and Fox Sports Net.

Media companies "are managing a different business than they did" in the '80s, a multichannel and multimarket one, said David W. Rips, director of the media and entertainment practice at Deloitte Consulting.

Whatever the financial intricacies, consumers will make their way through them.

Chris Becker, 43, of Newport Beach, has a strike strategy in place: DVD rentals of dozens of movies he's been wanting to watch and season compilations of new network series.

"I try to be selective, but now's the opportunity to catch up," Becker said. "I'll probably see shows I hadn't seen before."

Mobile-friendly version Immortal Technique Biography

Born Felipe Andres Coronel on the 19th of February 1978, hip-hop artist Immortal Technique is a controversial figure in the U.S. His songs speak of the need for social justice and equality among all races, with special emphasis on the people of color or Latin Americans, but they also cover topics such as the fight against unfair imprisonments or militarism and many others.

His biography is hence quite intriguing, to say the least, and, just like the best anti aging cream is probably going to be lingering over the shelves of all cosmetic stores for many years to come, Immortal Technique’s songs are going to remain hot, fresh and sought after for a really long time. Due to the fact they speak about topics which are to be considered taboos, his lyrics continue to be listened to with the exterior shutters down in most homes.

Immortal technique was born in Peru, in El Hospital Militar de Lima; several years later, his family moved to America in order to escape the harsh living conditions in Peru. Even though they could not afford to buy any terrain a vendre there, they managed to move to Harlem in the ‘80s. Immortal Technique went to Hunter High School, but just like a hip replacement recall is never of good omen, his grades and behavior weren’t any good during high school either. He was the school bully, he harassed other students and he was not afraid to get involved in scandals with drug dealers from around the area. And while his interactions with these drug dealers were not as numerous as used cars in Phoenix are, they still managed to leave an ugly mark on his biography.

Plus, his graffiti did not actually resemble any Dreamweaver templates, but he was famous for his controversial acts of vandalism. His violence against others almost got him expelled in 1996, but he somehow managed to finish high school and even attend college at Pennsylvania State University. This time, his college experience only lasted for two years; he was then charged and convicted and he was eventually imprisoned in Pennsylvania.

In prison, just like a SEO San Antonio company would focus on booting a web site’s ranking, Immortal Technique also focused on boosting his own social ranking. He began studying the policy of religious history, and, finding the inspiration he needed, he began putting his thoughts in lyrics. In 1999 he was paroled and, even though he was first considered some sort of Agen Bola, as no one had heard of him at first, he began to attend freestyle battles he started winning.

From there on, his career started to bloom, as he gave birth to albums such as “Revolutionary Vol 1” in 2002, “Revolutionary Vol 2” in 2004 and “Revolutionary Vol 3” in 2008. He also became a political activist and started to sing about political injustice (check out his opinion on the imprisonment of Mumia Abu-Jamal or the songs on George W. Bush). Despite of the fact that his albums might not have gotten the type of positive reviews African mango reviews are usually comprised of, this has not stopped him from getting involved in future projects, including an important film collaboration. He might not approve the work of the CNA Financial Corporation, but we all need to eat, right?

Recently I've been in the market for used cars. Which I'm sure many of you know how long that process can take. Having to go from dealer to dealer and look at one car after another. What a painstaking process! Its a good thing I don't have to take a personality test after the whole process. I'm sure I'd have some pretty skewed results. After finally settling down and buying a new Audi A4, I found out I had a bigger problem on my hands. Where am I gonna park the car during winter? I decided I had to contact a local contractor and get remodeling estimates to redo our garage which had been having problems with leaks all last winter. After getting some rather expensive estimates back from contractors our family finally decided to move to a different area of New York, we took a look at jamestown ny homes which was recommended by a close friend of mine. Have you ever just had that feeling after looking at a town? You just knew it was the one. Well thankfully we had a lot of wonderful homes to look at that were priced perfectly. We eventually decided to go with a home with a nice garage for the new car, a gym witih a full pull up bar, and best of all my wife could stop taking her proactol and finally begin to use our at home gym!

If during your trip you make it out to England be sure to say "Hi!" to our friends that is a wedding photographer york. They do an exceptional job and we recommend them to everyone that we know!
When overlooking your home don't forget the key essentials to tie in the whole room and complete it altogether, such as a POS software to manage your point of sale units. Making the perfect home for everyone in your family is doable with the right budget. Start by heading to auction sites to see what type of homes are currently on the market and the prices. Auction sites provide a medium to determine market value of homes in the are that you are looking at. If traveling internationally and looking at homes in Drakensberg then be sure to look online for Drakensberg accommodation. Drakensbergs accomodations often come with coffee machine in your room as well! For us caffeine lovers, you know how important that is when traveling in a new city. What often begins with a worldwide traveling excursion often ends in an unknown city. If you are planning on traveling to far away places its best to do your research on them before venturing out. Planning how to pack, and what to bring with you from the beginning can make the difference altogether. Planning on which handbag to take is crucial to your happiness. Now I know you are probably thinking that's trivial, although choosing the right handbag to take with you on a lengthy trip around the world is of the utmost importance. Make sure that you take as little as possibly needed on the trip. You don't want to lug around suitcases, and unnecessary stuff throughout the world. It'll weigh down on your trip, no pun intended.
The History and Growth of Rap Music

If you are a music enthusiast, then it is very likely that you have come across a genre of music called rap music. Rap music is area that has very clear distinguishing features most notably the rapid and rhythmic chanting of the lyrics perfectly timed to the beat and musical accompaniment that forms the base of the song. Rap music traces its roots to the development of the hiphop subculture which predominantly carries four complementary musical styles namely: rapping, dancing and in particular break dancing, scratching or more popularity known as DJing, and graffiti writing which others dub as vandalism. Another sub-element of this genre is beat-boxing which also features heavily in the repertoire of many rap artists. If you thought this was an easy musical genre to characterize, then you were poorly informed: consider, many research papers and doctoral dissertations have been written on the subject of rap music and its accompanying stylistic elements.

The history of rap music, or hip-hop music, is composed of a series of rapid development phases that have all culminated in the popular rap versions of today. Before rap music took off in the 1990s, it was predominantly referred to as disco rap in the late 1970s. The three rappers who had a hand in coining the term “rap music” were DJ Hollywood, Lovebug Starski, and Keith Cowboy, the last one being officially credited with the term hip-hop. Rap music original began with improvisations and freestyle singing to add an element of unpredictability to the songs in parties and other gatherings. Even in the 1960s to 1970s, the initial elements of rap music where already sown in urban subcultures particularly in New York City where adhoc performances in the streets led to a coalescing of influences in the wake of the Civil Rights era. Like the iPhone 5 release date, it had a slow and steady rise building into an explosion of creativity and style that has made it into what it has become today.

At this very early stage of rap development, it was particularly tied to emcee-ing more than it was associated to any specific song. It predominantly tied songs together as an adlib in between. It was born out of the creative inputs of DJs who had to work with self-imposed musical constraints such as the 4/4 time beat and sampling or sequencing sections of other songs to create a smooth flow of uninterrupted musical stimuli. These were eventually married with electronic equipment such as drums and synthesizers, and ultimate melodies to give it that bite and identity. In a sense, rap music artists were basically like a video game designer who had to figure out each artistic component at every turn until it developed into a more coherent musical genre that became the rap music we know today.

The first recorded version of rap music came alive in the early 1980s when DJs decided to make records out of their freestyle MCing. This necessitated the documentation of song lyrics so they do not change during each and every rendition. The age of the stromanbieter for rap music was gone paving the way for more organized chaos. Still, the freestyle and improvisation element remained a part of many DJ interludes as the song goes through certain sections that did not require too much rap singing.

Likewise, as a consequence of the hip-hop records, the influence of rap began to spread faster than ever before. Artists no longer had to travel far to get their music heard. Now, records from New York City and Philadelphia can be reproduced and transported to cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans, Dallas, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Seattle among others for people to appreciate and enjoy. This was primarily the reason for rap music’s rapid growth. Like Christmas mini lights, cities formed the nodes through which rap music would spread to other parts of the country. From small beginnings to grand achievements, the birth certificate translation to true stardom took a matter of years for rap music to be realized. Since then, its take-off and rise has been meteoric.

In this regard, it is almost impossible to talk about rap music but not discuss the golden age of rap. This was the era from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s when rap grew at an astounding rate fueled by the creative contributions of many artists from all over the continental United States and in many parts of the world. The primary trait of the Golden Age or Rap was that it was an almost unbroken wave of transformative music with every single pushing the boundaries of the genre. From this age and in the succeeding Gansta Rap age came names like Run-D.M.C., Dr. Dre, Ice T, MC Hammer, The Wu-tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, and The Notorious B.I.G. among others. The list of names can virtually fill a Sharepoint Hive without any problems.

According to social studies published in 2005, teenagers and children are more familiar with hip-hop and rap music more than any other musical genre. Up to 65% of all children from ages 8 to 18 hear hip-hop music on a daily basis, making it their routinary keratin hair treatment session, almost to the point that it has become an intrinsic part of their lives. With the diversification of the genre to include the more stylish R&B or rhythm and blues, it is not difficult to explain how rap music has continued to pervade radio station, TV and movie song line-ups. The marriage of rap and jazz which paved the way for R&B is itself a phenomenon that warrants all sorts of social analysis.

And with its very strong following, it is safe to say that rap music is here to stay. Years from now, when you open your TV on a bright Saturday morning, there’s a big chance you would be watching the next stage in the evolution of rap music, and there’s an even better chance you would be dancing or singing to that tune.
