So this is old events to me but i decided to post this now. This even happened about 3/4 of a year ago and it was a black history month presentation at my high skewl.

So this white girl, mid 20s comes to the stage, she introduces herself and shes from a university (forgot which) and she starts rapping (horribly btw) and yeah, she starts rapping about how shes apart of the black culture even though shes white and says things like (paraphrasing)

'don't judge me because im not black, i am apart of black culture'

so i was like wtf? You're white.

what up with that? culture vulture?

I would like to know what does the girl in question think black culture is. Is the sum of black culture relegated to one narrowly define musically interest?  Honestly I am starting to see that some people that are into rap music and/or hip hop have some of the most racists and stereotypical views of black people. If Nervecell report is accurate, people was not judging her based on the fact that she was white, but rather that her skills as a MC was awful.

I agree with sativaindica, that hip hop culture should not be view solely as a black cultural experience, but I think where some of the sentiment of having hip hop be that comes form is the experience of other black artists with regard to the ownership of their work in the past. Elvis is viewed as of the King, but no one points out that some of the songs he is known for where written by black artists and those artists rarely received anything in return for their work.

Hip Hop is clearly the vehicle used by the marginalized. This is why Hip Hop includes the black cultural experience. The Hip Hop experience (underground or not) unravels the voids in Capitalism and the Eurocentric institutions. Randomly selecting a Hip Hop artist in Bosnia will not change this reality.

She could be more commercial than 50 Cent, and even then, most will see a blur between her reality and their own disparate environment. The Capitalist wasteland will form the region between these two "worlds". That wasteland, the future of the Capitalist, makes the gap feel even greater.

Point being, the pressures that are the result of Hip Hop is very powerful. That is why the public (i.e. Capitalist institutions) blame the genre for societal ills. The genre is screaming: "shit's so fucked up", to those like Jay-Z, "I'm so fucked up", and such, is certainly not a message unique to black folks only.

Its really bullshit that white institutions, many whites, and pseudo-whites attempt to classify the message as something belonging to strictly one group. That is possible, but to suggest, blacks only have such a experience vs. Hispanics, Kashmiris, etc, suggest some sort of discreteness. To say that would contradict biology and history. Then another criticism is that the ability to vandalize these Eurocentric institutions destroys the disparity...yawn...

Born Felipe Andres Coronel on the 19th of February 1978, hip-hop artist Immortal Technique is a controversial figure in the U.S. His songs speak of the need for social justice and equality among all races, with special emphasis on the people of color or Latin Americans, but they also cover topics such as the fight against unfair imprisonments or militarism and many others.

The History and Growth of Rap Music

If you are a music enthusiast, then it is very likely that you have come across a genre of music called rap music. From small beginnings to grand achievements, the birth certificate translation to true stardom took a matter of years for rap music to be realized. Since then, its take-off and rise has been meteoric.

In this regard, it is almost impossible to talk about rap music but not discuss the golden age of rap. This was the era from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s when rap grew at an astounding rate fueled by the creative contributions of many artists from all over the continental United States and in many parts of the world. The primary trait of the Golden Age or Rap was that it was an almost unbroken wave of transformative music with every single pushing the boundaries of the genre. From this age and in the succeeding Gansta Rap age came names like Run-D.M.C., Dr. Dre, Ice T, MC Hammer, The Wu-tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, and The Notorious B.I.G. among others. According to social studies published in 2005, teenagers and children are more familiar with hip-hop and rap music more than any other musical genre.
