Date set for Australia's apology
January 30, 2008 04:00pm
Article from: AAP

Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin today announced the apology would be the first item of business for the new parliament.

Ms Macklin today said the apology was the "first, necessary step to move forward from the past".

"The apology will be made on behalf of the Australian government and does not attribute guilt to the current generation of Australian people," she said.

Ms Macklin said she had consulted widely on the apology, including with the National Sorry Day Committee and the Stolen Generations Alliance and its patrons former prime minister Malcolm Fraser and prominent Aboriginal leader Lowitja O'Donoghue.

Ms Macklin said consultations were continuing but she was confident the timing of the apology was appropriate.

She said the apology would signal the beginning of a new relationship, a bridge to build respect and a powerful healing symbol.

"Once we establish this respect, the government can work with indigenous communities to improve services aimed at closing the 17-year life expectancy gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians,'' she said.

Ms Macklin said she hoped there would be bi-partisan support in the parliament for the apology.

Ms Macklin said there would also be a national Welcome to Country ceremony as part of the opening proceedings for parliament on Tuesday, February 12.

The Australia government needs to start telling the truth: Australia is a racist country, and Australians (i.e. white) are predominantly (if not exclusively) racist. Not that we should be hoping Australians as individuals change their views, but honestly, it's so irrelevant when you see Aboriginals "enjoying" third world living standards.

It's rather upsetting that poor aboriginals are bleeding and yet waiting for assistance that they should be receiving. In return, Australia opposes the UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous people simply because the oppressor state wants to have the final say on the verdict on its crime. The only reason this declaration exists is because states like Australia do a lousy job protecting Aboriginal rights.

Hypocrisy at the most finest level: a trait terror states often carry.

PS: Black Aboriginal self-determination is the only way to eliminate oppression.

National Sorry Day? What about national reparation day? That would be much more useful.

Plus symbolism could be included imprison the elites who promote this disparity. There is a side of me that'd prefer public stoning and torture, but damn it, at least send these terrorists to jail.

Date set for Australia's apology
"The apology will be made on behalf of the Australian government and does not attribute guilt to the current generation of Australian people," she said.

So what, its like, "We are sorry for centuries of oppression, just forgive and forget so we can still benefit off of the land we stole from you, and not have to give you any reparations."

Well, imo it's kinda like this ... the Koori people (black fellas) came over here with the first migrations from Africa, about 40-50,000 years ago. They are a very spiritual people (but they're not homogeneous, they're made up of 100s of tribes), and when the white man came here, he fucked the black fellas .... in the name of British imperialism. In some areas genocide occurred, in other areas, the blacks were put into slavery.

I believe there are consequences for the past sins of the whites ... the Koori spirits still flow over the land (a land which was cared for by the black fellas for 1000's of years, and has been largely fucked up by the white man in a couple of centuries).

The whites here are now paying for the mistakes made by their forefathers, and by their complicity in these crimes by perpetuating this status quo. They have never had a sense of identity .... For the first 200 years or so, they looked to England for meaning ... now they look to the USA. White people here are some mixed up motherfukkas ... by always reaching to far away Anglo strongholds for identity they have effectively marginalised themselves ... and created a scenario where a distinct sense of inadequacy is a dominant facet of the national psyche. These idiots don't relate to their (Asian) region at all, rather they look to the Anglo nations which is in line with their racist history. So that's the curse .... they're cursed to an existence without an identity ... and ironically the Aboriginal culture continues.

Of course not all the white people here are so ignorant. A small minority see the bullshit around them, and try to support the people of the land.

Time for nation to turn new page

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tables his speech to Parliament apologising for the treatment of Australia's indigneous stolen generations.

The normally ordered surrounds of Parliament House in Canberra were filled with a wonderful chaos today as a black and white flood of Australians poured into the People's House to hear the long-overdue apology to the stolen generations.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd rose to deliver the historic apology after receiving a standing ovation when he walked into the chamber with Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin.

Before his speech, Mr Rudd formally moved that the House of Representatives apologise to Australia's indigenous peoples.

''We reflect on their past mistreatment, we reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were stolen generations - this blemished chapter in our national history.

''The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page.''

Mr Rudd said the apology was meant in the ''true spirit of reconciliation, to open a new chapter in the history of this great land, Australia''.

''Our nation Australia has reached such a time and that is why the Parliament is today here assembled,'' he said.

''To deal with this unfinished business of the nation.

''To remove a great stain from the nation's soul and in the true spirit of reconciliation to open a new chapter in the history of this great land Australia.''

While today's formal apology said ''sorry'' three times, Mr Rudd's speech also offered apologies to the stolen generations.

''As Prime Minister of Australia, I am sorry,'' he said.

''On behalf of the Government of Australia, I am sorry. On behalf of the Parliament of Australia, I am sorry. I offer you this apology without qualification.''

Mr Rudd told the emotional story of an elderly indigenous woman, part of the stolen generations, who he visited a few days ago.

''An elegant, eloquent and wonderful woman in her 80s full of life, full of funny stories despite what has happened in her life's journey,'' the prime minister said.

Mr Rudd said his friend told him of the love and warmth she felt while growing up with her family in an Aboriginal community just outside Tennant Creek.

In the early 1930s, at the age of four, she remembers being taken away by ''the welfare men''.

''Her family had feared that day and had dug holes in the creek bank where the children could run and hide,'' Mr Rudd said.

They brought a truck, two white men and an Aboriginal stockman who found the hiding children and herded them into the truck.

She remembered her mother clinging onto the side of the truck, with tears flowing down her cheeks as it drove off. She never saw her mother again.

After living in Alice Springs for a ''few years'', government policy changed and the young girl was handed over to the missions.

''The kids were simply told to line up in three lines ... those on the left were told they had become Catholics, those in the middle, Methodist and those on the right, Church of England,'' Mr Rudd said.

''That's how the complex questions of post-reformation theology were resolved in the Australian outback in the 1930s. It was as crude as that.''

She didn't leave the island mission until she was 16 when she went to Darwin to work as a ''domestic''.

When the Prime Minister asked his friend what of her story she wanted told she answered: ''All mothers are important.''

''Families, keeping them together is very important, it's a good thing that you are surrounded by love and that love is passed down the generations - that's what gives you happiness.''

Mr Rudd said the woman's experience was ''only one story, there are thousands of them, tens of thousands of them''.

Mr Rudd said the stories ''cry out'' to be heard and ''cry out'' for an apology.

''Instead from the nation's Parliament there has been a stony and stubborn and deafening silence for more than a decade.

''As of today the time for denial, the time for delay, has at last come to an end.''

Addressing critics of a formal apology who argued that the stolen generations were a historical anomaly who did not require an apology, Mr Rudd said the stolen generations ''are not intellectual curiosities, they are human beings''.

Mr Rudd also addressed the argument, often forwarded by his predecessor John Howard, that a government cannot apologise for actions of a past government's policy.

''Let us remember the fact that the forced removal of Aboriginal children was happening as late as the early 1970's, the early 1970's is not a point in remote antiquity.

''The laws that our Parliament enacted made the stolen generations possible.

''This is not a black armband view of history, it's just the truth, the cold uncomfortable truth.''

Mr Rudd called for the Opposition join the Government in forming the equivalent a war cabinet to tackled indigenous issues.

''I therefore propose a joint policy commission to be led by the leader of the opposition and myself,'' he said.

The Prime Minister said the commission would first develop and implement an effective housing strategy for remote communities during the next five years.

If that was successful the commission would then work on the constitutional recognition of first Australians.

''The nation is calling on us the politicians to move beyond our infantile bickering, our point scoring, our mindlessly partisan politics and elevate this one, at least this one, area of national responsibility to a rare position beyond the partisan divide.''

"Let us turn this next page together.''

As Opposition Leader Brendan  Nelson began speaking, some people in Parliament's Great Hall, outside the parliamentary chamber, turned their backs on the large screen on which the speech was being televised.

They began clapping and yelling ''shame'', and some started to walk out.

Dr Nelson said he rose to speak ''strongly'' in support of the apology.

''Today our nation crosses a threshold. We formally offer an apology, we say sorry to those Aboriginal people forcibly removed from their families through the first seven decades of the 20th century,'' Dr Nelson said.

''In doing so, we reach from within ourselves to our past, those whose lives connect us to it, and in deep understanding of its importance to our future.''

Dr Nelson urged other Australians to place themselves in the the shoes of the stolen generations and see the issue through their eyes ''with decency and respect''.

He called on Australians to focus on the contemporary problems of their indigenous counterparts.

''Spare a thought for the real, immediate, seemingly intractable and disgraceful circumstances in which many indigenous Australians find themselves today,'' he said.

These included lower life expectancy, alcohol abuse, welfare without responsibilities, corrupt management of resources, nepotism, political buckpassing, lack of home ownership, under-policing and tolerance by authorities of neglect and abuse of children.

''All combine to see too many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living lives of existential aimlessness,'' Dr Nelson said.

Closing his speech, Dr Nelson said: ''We honour those in our past who have suffered - many of whom are here today - and all who have made sacrifices for us, by the way we live our lives and shape our nation.

''Today we recommit to do so as one people - we are sorry.''

Like Mr Rudd, Dr Nelson received a standing ovation following his speech.

There was a palpable surge of emotion as MPs on both sides of Parliament and hundreds in the public gallery leapt collectively to their feet, clapping loudly.

Applause again erupted as Mr Rudd and Dr Nelson moved to greet guests, including Aboriginal leaders and members of the stolen generations, seated in the distinguished visitors' gallery on the floor of the chamber.

The MPs on the floor turned and clapped towards the people who included many members of the stolen generations and their families.

From early in the morning a long queue formed at the main entrance and crowds gathered outside the building around giant screens. Carrying Aboriginal flags and decked in black, red and yellow shirts, the throng carried with it a palpable feeling of expectation and relief.

Among those who came to the capital were athlete Nova Peris-Kneebone who brought her daughters to represent her sick grandmother who, as a child, was taken from her family.

As she approached the building, she said she was steeling herself for a flood of emotion when she finally heard the word "sorry''.

Mr Rudd said that until Australians confronted the truth about the stolen generations there would always be a shadow over them.

This morning, on a cool and cloudy day in the capital, that shadow began to lift.

I think for the first time ever I agree with the Liberal party on something. One of their ministers said that this is just a hollow statement that will do nothing to change the lives of Aboriginal people in a real way. Couldn't agree more.

Lol @ the huge crowds at Fed Square, etc clapping while watching Rudd's speech. "Yes, our guilt is now gone. Nothing more is required" Cheesy

I have a feeling that rather than promoting self-determination (i.e. aboriginals controlling their own institutions), he's instead going to funnel more cash into white-led "social" projects. The same bullshit blacks in Australia have seen earlier, which rather than supporting the target population, promoted standard of living amongst whites.

^ For sure. I actually think Howard was somewhat better in this regard, as he didn't claim to be "sorry" for their living standards, etc. At least he was honest about his stance. Rudd will give many the impression that things are improving when really they'll just be better hidden. We shall see...

^ My issue is white-led social programmes. Just ask Blacks in Baltimore, who are now devastated, what increased white interventionism has done. This may sound twisted, but I'd rather remain isolated than receive such support.

Today, what is considered the most "progressive" solution is actually being further developed in cities like Baltimore, where integration (or mixed income structure) is being heavily promoted. And even though it sounds so nice on paper---let's hope it doesn't proceed in Australia. I've seen many support such solutions, even though it's greatly failing in US cities.

I don't disagree with you. It seems clear even from now that there'll be little change in the way things will proceed. Rudd was talking about running a "policy commission" on Indigenous affairs with the opposition leader, among other similar things, so I'm not holding my breath.

Gillard moves to help indigenous children

February 14, 2008 11:58am
Article from: AAP

A DAY after the historic apology, the Federal Government has taken the first step to improving indigenous education.

Education Minister Julia Gillard today introduced legislation to pay for more teachers in remote areas of the Northern Territory.

Ms Gillard said the measure would mean an extra 50 teachers this year and an extra 200 over the four years to 2011.

The cost this year will be $7.16 million, with a further $56.8 million to be spent in future years.

Ms Gillard said there were about 10,000 school-aged children in communities affected by the Northern Territory emergency response.

But 2000 of them were not at school and a further 2500 didn't stay at school long enough to benefit.

Foundation

Ms Gillard said education was the foundation for productive, rewarding lives.

"This measure reflects the Government's commitment to ensuring that indigenous students, wherever they live, have access to educational opportunities that are equivalent to their non-indigenous peers," she said.

The measure would also help to meet the Government's objective of halving the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy within a decade.

War cabinet

Yesterday Prime Minister Kevin Rudd invited Brendan Nelson into a "war cabinet" to tackle Aboriginal disadvantage as he pledged to follow his historic apology to the Stolen Generations with practical measures to improve indigenous lives.

As part of his passionate and unqualified apology - greeted by cheers and a standing ovation on the floor of parliament and by gatherings in cities around the country - the Prime Minister promised to give all Aboriginal children a full preschool education and first-class healthcare within five years.

The bipartisan "war cabinet", to be jointly chaired by Mr Rudd and the Opposition Leader to put indigenous welfare above party politics, will be first charged with designing a plan for remote Aboriginal housing within five years.

Despite the warm reception to the apology, indigenous leaders such as Pat Dodson again called for the Government to reconsider its opposition to compensation for the Stolen Generations.

I am sorry

Watched by a packed public gallery, including weeping members of the Stolen Generations and four of the five living prime ministers, Mr Rudd apologised unreservedly on behalf of the Parliament and personally for acts carried out by past governments.

"As Prime Minister of Australia, I am sorry," he said.

"On behalf of the Government of Australia, I am sorry.

"On behalf of the parliament of Australia, I am sorry."

Where's Johnny?

Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, who in 1995 commissioned the Bringing Them Home report that identified the Stolen Generations, watched on in the House of Representatives.

John Howard, who spent 11 years in office refusing to apologise, was the only living former prime minister not present.

Dr Nelson's response was met with boos after he offered a qualified apology to the Stolen Generations and graphically described the sexual abuse of indigenous children in Northern Territory communities.

Backs turned

Many around the country turned their backs when Dr Nelson spoke, with members of the Stolen Generations and indigenous leaders saying they were offended.

Dr Nelson said the current generation of Australians "does not own these actions nor should it feel guilt for what was done in many, but certainly not all, cases with the best of intentions".

He said Australians should instead focus on indigenous life expectancy, alcohol abuse, corruption, nepotism, political buckpassing, lack of home ownership, under-policing and tolerance by authorities of neglect and abuse of children.

Dr Nelson's support for the apology was spoilt by at least six Coalition MPs boycotting the apology and others showing disinterest in the chamber.

Future hopes

Mr Rudd promised that over the next five years, every indigenous four-year-old in remote Aboriginal communities would be enrolled in and attending a proper early childhood education centre.

"Let us resolve to build new educational opportunities for these little ones, year by year, step by step, following the completion of their crucial pre-school year," Mr Rudd said.

"Let us resolve to use this systematic approach to build future educational opportunities for indigenous children to provide proper primary and preventive healthcare for the same children, to begin the task of rolling back the obscenity that we find today in infant mortality rates in remote indigenous communities - up to four times higher than in other communities."

Yesterday's formal apology came more than a decade after the Bringing Them Home report, which documented the stories of some of the tens of thousands of Aboriginal children taken by governments between 1910 and the early 1970s, was handed to the Howard government.

The Prime Minister criticised federal parliament's previous failure to offer an apology. "Instead, from the nation's parliament, there has been a stony and stubborn and deafening silence for more than a decade ... the time for delay, has at last come to an end."

Mobile-friendly version Immortal Technique Biography

Born Felipe Andres Coronel on the 19th of February 1978, hip-hop artist Immortal Technique is a controversial figure in the U.S. His songs speak of the need for social justice and equality among all races, with special emphasis on the people of color or Latin Americans, but they also cover topics such as the fight against unfair imprisonments or militarism and many others.

His biography is hence quite intriguing, to say the least, and, just like the best anti aging cream is probably going to be lingering over the shelves of all cosmetic stores for many years to come, Immortal Technique’s songs are going to remain hot, fresh and sought after for a really long time. Due to the fact they speak about topics which are to be considered taboos, his lyrics continue to be listened to with the exterior shutters down in most homes.

Immortal technique was born in Peru, in El Hospital Militar de Lima; several years later, his family moved to America in order to escape the harsh living conditions in Peru. Even though they could not afford to buy any terrain a vendre there, they managed to move to Harlem in the ‘80s. Immortal Technique went to Hunter High School, but just like a hip replacement recall is never of good omen, his grades and behavior weren’t any good during high school either. He was the school bully, he harassed other students and he was not afraid to get involved in scandals with drug dealers from around the area. And while his interactions with these drug dealers were not as numerous as used cars in Phoenix are, they still managed to leave an ugly mark on his biography.

Plus, his graffiti did not actually resemble any Dreamweaver templates, but he was famous for his controversial acts of vandalism. His violence against others almost got him expelled in 1996, but he somehow managed to finish high school and even attend college at Pennsylvania State University. This time, his college experience only lasted for two years; he was then charged and convicted and he was eventually imprisoned in Pennsylvania.

In prison, just like a SEO San Antonio company would focus on booting a web site’s ranking, Immortal Technique also focused on boosting his own social ranking. He began studying the policy of religious history, and, finding the inspiration he needed, he began putting his thoughts in lyrics. In 1999 he was paroled and, even though he was first considered some sort of Agen Bola, as no one had heard of him at first, he began to attend freestyle battles he started winning.

From there on, his career started to bloom, as he gave birth to albums such as “Revolutionary Vol 1” in 2002, “Revolutionary Vol 2” in 2004 and “Revolutionary Vol 3” in 2008. He also became a political activist and started to sing about political injustice (check out his opinion on the imprisonment of Mumia Abu-Jamal or the songs on George W. Bush). Despite of the fact that his albums might not have gotten the type of positive reviews African mango reviews are usually comprised of, this has not stopped him from getting involved in future projects, including an important film collaboration. He might not approve the work of the CNA Financial Corporation, but we all need to eat, right?

The History and Growth of Rap Music

If you are a music enthusiast, then it is very likely that you have come across a genre of music called rap music. Rap music is area that has very clear distinguishing features most notably the rapid and rhythmic chanting of the lyrics perfectly timed to the beat and musical accompaniment that forms the base of the song. Rap music traces its roots to the development of the hiphop subculture which predominantly carries four complementary musical styles namely: rapping, dancing and in particular break dancing, scratching or more popularity known as DJing, and graffiti writing which others dub as vandalism. Another sub-element of this genre is beat-boxing which also features heavily in the repertoire of many rap artists. If you thought this was an easy musical genre to characterize, then you were poorly informed: consider, many research papers and doctoral dissertations have been written on the subject of rap music and its accompanying stylistic elements.

The history of rap music, or hip-hop music, is composed of a series of rapid development phases that have all culminated in the popular rap versions of today. Before rap music took off in the 1990s, it was predominantly referred to as disco rap in the late 1970s. The three rappers who had a hand in coining the term “rap music” were DJ Hollywood, Lovebug Starski, and Keith Cowboy, the last one being officially credited with the term hip-hop. Rap music original began with improvisations and freestyle singing to add an element of unpredictability to the songs in parties and other gatherings. Even in the 1960s to 1970s, the initial elements of rap music where already sown in urban subcultures particularly in New York City where adhoc performances in the streets led to a coalescing of influences in the wake of the Civil Rights era. Like the iPhone 5 release date, it had a slow and steady rise building into an explosion of creativity and style that has made it into what it has become today.

At this very early stage of rap development, it was particularly tied to emcee-ing more than it was associated to any specific song. It predominantly tied songs together as an adlib in between. It was born out of the creative inputs of DJs who had to work with self-imposed musical constraints such as the 4/4 time beat and sampling or sequencing sections of other songs to create a smooth flow of uninterrupted musical stimuli. These were eventually married with electronic equipment such as drums and synthesizers, and ultimate melodies to give it that bite and identity. In a sense, rap music artists were basically like a video game designer who had to figure out each artistic component at every turn until it developed into a more coherent musical genre that became the rap music we know today.

The first recorded version of rap music came alive in the early 1980s when DJs decided to make records out of their freestyle MCing. This necessitated the documentation of song lyrics so they do not change during each and every rendition. The age of the stromanbieter for rap music was gone paving the way for more organized chaos. Still, the freestyle and improvisation element remained a part of many DJ interludes as the song goes through certain sections that did not require too much rap singing.

Likewise, as a consequence of the hip-hop records, the influence of rap began to spread faster than ever before. Artists no longer had to travel far to get their music heard. Now, records from New York City and Philadelphia can be reproduced and transported to cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans, Dallas, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Seattle among others for people to appreciate and enjoy. This was primarily the reason for rap music’s rapid growth. Like Christmas mini lights, cities formed the nodes through which rap music would spread to other parts of the country. From small beginnings to grand achievements, the birth certificate translation to true stardom took a matter of years for rap music to be realized. Since then, its take-off and rise has been meteoric.

In this regard, it is almost impossible to talk about rap music but not discuss the golden age of rap. This was the era from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s when rap grew at an astounding rate fueled by the creative contributions of many artists from all over the continental United States and in many parts of the world. The primary trait of the Golden Age or Rap was that it was an almost unbroken wave of transformative music with every single pushing the boundaries of the genre. From this age and in the succeeding Gansta Rap age came names like Run-D.M.C., Dr. Dre, Ice T, MC Hammer, The Wu-tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, and The Notorious B.I.G. among others. The list of names can virtually fill a Sharepoint Hive without any problems.

According to social studies published in 2005, teenagers and children are more familiar with hip-hop and rap music more than any other musical genre. Up to 65% of all children from ages 8 to 18 hear hip-hop music on a daily basis, making it their routinary keratin hair treatment session, almost to the point that it has become an intrinsic part of their lives. With the diversification of the genre to include the more stylish R&B or rhythm and blues, it is not difficult to explain how rap music has continued to pervade radio station, TV and movie song line-ups. The marriage of rap and jazz which paved the way for R&B is itself a phenomenon that warrants all sorts of social analysis.

And with its very strong following, it is safe to say that rap music is here to stay. Years from now, when you open your TV on a bright Saturday morning, there’s a big chance you would be watching the next stage in the evolution of rap music, and there’s an even better chance you would be dancing or singing to that tune.
